PRET A MANGER TO GIVE SECOND PAY RISE THIS YEAR TO HELP WITH RISING COST OF LIVING

As of 1st December, 8,600 UK shop staff to have seen an average of 13% pay increase in 2022 alone

  • Pret to invest a further £10 million in pay, surpassing the £9.2 million investment made in April this year

  • 6,500 shop Team Members to receive pay and benefits package worth more than £11.55 per hour, with majority earning above £11.75 per hour

  • Pret baristas will be amongst the highest paid in the industry, now able to earn up to £13.75 per hour

11th October 2022 – Pret A Manger has today announced it will be investing an additional £10 million in staff pay, further supporting its UK workforce in the wake of the rising cost of living. From 1st December 2022, all UK employees across shops and its support centre will receive a 5% pay increase. This means that 8,600 shop staff* including Team Members, Baristas and Shop Managers will see an average baseline pay increase of 13% within a year, which is currently above inflation. This will be the second consecutive year that Pret has given two pay increases in the same year and will take the total Pret has invested in pay in 2022 to almost £20 million. This makes it the company’s biggest pay investment in its 36-year history, in recognition of the hard work and commitment of its people. Guy Meakin, Interim Managing Director at Pret A Manger UK & Ireland said: “Our people have always been at the heart of our business. All over the country, our shop teams work around the clock to make Pret a place people love. “With the rising cost of living putting increased pressure on our people, we wanted to do more to support them, and to say thank you for continuing to go above and beyond for our customers. “This will be the second year in a row we will have introduced a second pay rise in the same year for our employees, and we’re proud to be leading the industry on Barista pay. We aspire to always be a top employer, with all our employees earning well above the National Minimum Wage irrespective of age. “We hope this further investment alongside staff discounts and free food and drink while working, will go some way in helping our Teams through the winter months and beyond.” The 5% pay increase will be applied to shop employees irrespective of age, although some differences may apply depending on role, experience and location:

  • Team Members will see a pay increase from between £9.80 and £11.00 per hour to between £10.30 and £11.55 per hour depending on location.

  • With the Mystery Shopper bonus included, Team Member pay could be as high as between £11.55 and £12.80 per hour.

  • Overall, 6,500 Team Members will receive a pay and benefits package worth more than £11.55 per hour, with majority earning above £11.75 per hour.

  • Following two successful years with Pret’s award-winning Coffee Subscription, which allows customers to redeem up to five Barista-made drinks a day for £25 per month, the company is rewarding its hardworking Baristas with a pay increase, amongst the highest in the industry:

  • Barista pay will increase from between £10.30 and £11.90 per hour to between £10.85 and £12.50, depending on location and experience.

  • With the Mystery Shopper bonus included, Barista pay could be as high as between £12.10 - £13.75 per hour.

  • On average Team Members and Baristas working 35 hours a week have the potential to see an annual increase of up to £900 and £1000 respectively.

This pay increase is alongside Pret’s existing benefits package which includes free food and drink for shop staff while on shift including breakfast and lunch, 50% discount on food and drink for all staff otherwise and additional hourly bonuses for working early shift hours, ensuring Pret remains a top employer.

Notes to editors: • *Shop staff is defined as weekly paid employees (Team Members, Hot Chefs and Baristas) alongside Shop General Manager’s and Assistant Managers. • With this additional pay increase, those Team Members and Baristas have the potential to receive an additional £900 and £1,000 per year respectively. This is based on them working 35 hours per week for 52 weeks of the year (includes 4 weeks of paid holiday).

About the Pret Mystery Shopper Bonus: • A Mystery Shopper visits each Pret Shop every week. They purchase some Pret food and rate team on their performance of service, selection of products and cleanliness. • If a shop achieves a certain score, everyone eligible in the team will receive an extra £1.25/hr for that week’s pay. An average of 85% of Team Members are eligible to receive this additional hourly bonus.
